Whether you are hammering for function or texture, getting to grips with how to hammer your work is an essential skill for jewellery making.
In this workshop, I will show you how to work harden your wire so that it holds its shape and strengthens your designs. I will also so show you how to flare and taper your wire to create brooch pins and headpins and also how to hammer for texture and extra decoration.
You will create a host of findings, including headpins, clasps, S-hooks, brooch pins and simple wrap around rings.
Materials you will need:
(wires would be best in bare copper or sterling silver if you prefer)
· 0.6mm wire (not essential)
· 0.8mm wire
· 1mm wire
· 1.5mm wire
· Gems/beads to embellish if desired.
Tools you will need:
· Ball pein hammer (a flat end and a ball end)
· Texture hammers (not essential)
· Steel block
· Basic tool kit comprising of, flat/chain nose pliers, round nose pliers, wire cutters
· Ring mandrel
· Wire mandrels or 6 step bail making pliers
· Needle files
